The $50 Food Pledge
50 dollars

A message from Wayne Sedawie, founder of FarmFreshAuctions.com.au:

FarmFreshAuctions challenges every Aussie to take The $50 Food Pledge, a pledge to spend $50.00 per week outside of our monopoly supermarkets and with local Aussie companies instead.

See the Introduction Video

Why The $50 Food Pledge?

Australia's monopoly supermarkets import over 50% of our food from overseas. This creates four major problems:
1) Stores have little or no quality control over these foods.
2) Australians are subjected to some of the highest food costs in the world (41.3% increase since 2000, compared to 24.8% in the USA and 1.6% in Japan).
3) Our nation's farmers have not benefited from these price increases, and in some cases are seeing less money than in 2000.
4) Australia is now one of the most obese and unhealthy nations on earth.

Quality Control

On a visit to another country, I once saw a sewage farm next to prawn farm - maybe 6 meters away. Locals told me they often endured foul smells at night. I just love Aussies prawns!
In another country I visited, a manufacturer was fined for adding 20% cardboard to his food. For years he had gotten away with adding 5-10% cardboard, but he got greedy and was caught.
I have also seen imported oranges still fresh-looking after 4 months on a kitchen table. You can only imagine the chemical additives necessary to keep 4-month-old fruit looking fresh.

Food Costs

Supermarkets blame long distances for our expensive food. In reality, most of our population lives on the east coast and 64% of Aussies live in cities. The fact is that transport systems for fresh foods are economical and easily accessible.

Our Nation's Farmers

The operators of these monopoly supermarkets make billions of dollars in profit. But because one-half of the food they buy is imported, our farmers do not share in this wealth. The big monopolies are putting Aussie farmers and their families at risk. All Aussies must recognize this as a national risk, not only for our farmers, but for the Aussie way of life.

Obese and Unhealthy

21.7% of Aussies are obese, only slightly less than the USA's 30.6%. Approximately 47% of Australian women and 63% of Australian men are overweight.

New research has found that an unhealthy nation costs us 58 billion dollars, far more than was previously thought. Some experts believe that Aussies' aging obese population will collapse our present health system in 5-10 years.

In addition, food allergies are at epidemic levels. While scientific evidence remains inconclusive, just study the changes to our food chain and note how closely those changes correspond with our allergy epidemic.

Is there a solution to this national crisis?

Yes, there is. And it starts with The $50 Food Pledge.

My name is Wayne Sedawie and I am deeply concerned about the threat these monopoly supermarkets are posing to Australia's food supply. In response, I have created FarmFreshAuctions.com.au as a resource for Australians to purchase high-quality food directly from Australian farmers and food manufacturers.

What you can do with your $50:

  • Go to FarmFreshAuctions.com.au. We make it easy for you purchase direct from Australian farmers and food manufacturers.
  • Support your local shops.
  • Take family outings to farmers markets and buy direct from farmers.
  • Buy in bulk (form groups to share).
  • Buy Aussie products first.
  • Create a garden and grow some of your own fruits and veggies.

Coles and Woolworths now control around 80% of our food chain. In some countries, you'd have to go to a prison to find a food-supply chain so tightly controlled.

Join me and pledge to spend less money with these monopoly companies. Let's reduce their turnover by 5%. Let's support our local farmers. Take The $50 Food Pledge and spend $50 per week outside of these national chains and with local Aussie companies.

Aussies must take a stand now, before it is too late.
